Hospitals Consume Less Energy, Improve Patient Health With Inventive Green Air Filtration (Global news)

It’s the twin challenge for businesses today: operate more effi ciently, yet in an environmentally-friendly way. The idea: reduce costs while helping to save the planet. That’s no small order, to be sure, but with the right products – designed to use increasingly scarce (and expensive) resources more effi ciently – it is not only possible, but brings a competi ti ve advantage.

That’s the lesson a leading hospitality company – with 445 hotels nati onwide – learned when it decided to rethink how it deployed air fi lters at one of its major properti es, a high-profi le hotel located at one of the country’s three largest airports.

Hotels and air fi lters may seem an unlikely duo. Indeed, it has traditi onally been the healthcare industry where the subject of air fi ltrati on has garnered the most att enti on -- and litt le wonder: by removing harmful airborne parti cles, the best air fi lters keep air quality high and the chance of infecti on and disease low. But the benefi ts of clean air soluti ons -- bett er air, bett er savings, and a bett er environment -- can be achieved in any industry where clean, comfortable air is essenti al. And with many rooms -- and customers -- per property, hotels are a prime example.

For the hospitality company, the problem was simple: Its hotel was experiencing a high rate of air fi lter replacement in the heati ng/cooling units in each room. With fi lters needing to be changed each month, in all 700 rooms, it required a lot of labor, expense, and waste, which wasn’t good for the bott om line. The hotel was also concerned that the air fi lters weren’t as energy effi cient as they could be. That was a criti cal issue, as the less effi cient the fi lter, the more energy it used, which not only raised the hotel’s costs, but took a toll on the planet, as well. Working with Camfi l Farr, the world leader in air fi ltrati on and clean air soluti ons, the hospitality company decided to see if bett er results were possible. It tested a Camfi l Farr 30/30 fi lter against the brand it was already using, examining both contaminant loading on the air fi lters and the length of fi lter life. Aft er tests in multi ple rooms, the results were dramati c – and the acti on that needed to be taken became crystal clear.

The Camfi l Farr 30/30 air fi lter lasted fi ve months in actual use conditi ons – or fi ve ti mes as long as the hotel’s existi ng fi lters. This meant fewer fi lters would need to be purchased, lower total cost of ownership for the hotel’s heati ng and cooling units, and less waste generated. In other words, reduced disposal costs and a lot less material going to landfi lls. Once the hotel converted all 700 rooms to Camfi l Farr’s 30/30 fi lter, it was able to reduce the number of fi lters used per year from 8,400 to 1,680.

Just as signifi cant, however, were the energy savings. Camfi l Farr’s clean air soluti ons – designed from the ground up to provide opti mal energy effi ciency and performance that will not degrade over ti me (a problem with ‘standard’ air fi lter systems) – providing a result that enabled the hotel to reduce its energy cost per room by 17 percent annually. And that helped the hotel earn the company’s presti gious “Energy Honor Roll.”

But perhaps the biggest benefi t the company saw was the boost in air quality. By designing the 30/30 air fi lter from the ground up with effi ciency and sustainability in mind, Camfi l Farr was able to incorporate innovati ons that, simply, make a bett er product. In tests, the hotel quickly discovered that the superior dust holding capacity of the Camfi l Farr 3/30 meant much bett er, more healthful air in the guest rooms -- with far less exposure to pollens and allergens.
